カンボジア、タイ、ミャンマー、ラオス、アフガニスタンなどアジアにまだ、本を知らない子どもたちがいるなんて想像できますか？

一冊の絵本で子ども達の未来が大きくかわります。本の力は、世界の子ども達の、生きる希望になるんです。

カンボジアの有名な世界無形文化遺産に登録されているダンス、伝統舞踊のアプサラ・ダンスをご存知でしょうか？

アプサラ・ダンスは、きらびやかな衣装で、強い肉体と心を表現し、明るく、優しくカンボジア人そのものを表現したダンスです。

アプサラダンスはポル・ポト政権時代におきた知識人の大虐殺により、踊り子の９割の人が殺害されました。

現在、私たちが世界無形文化遺産に登録されているダンス、伝統舞踊のアプサラ・ダンスを観ることができるのは、生き延びた踊り子の奮闘によるものと、もう一つは以外ですが本のおかげなんですよ。

アプサラの舞について描かれた絵本がたくさんの子どもたちの目にとまり、読まれることによってカンボジア人の伝統文化が語り継がれています。

本にはとても強い力があります。本の力は、先人の叡智や歴史から学ぶことだけではなく、人の喜び、悲しみを理解すること、狭い世界で、考えずに広い世界への視野を広げる。

そして、字を学ぶと言うことは、子ども達の未来を豊かに、そして世界中の人が幸せに暮らせる世の中になるはずです。

物があふれる日本や先進国などでは、お菓子などの一時的に満足できるものを選ぶ子どもが多いのではないでしょうか？

カンボジアの難民キュンプの少女が、選んだのはお菓子ではなく絵本でした。なぜ、絵本にしたのか少女に聞くとお菓子は食べればすぐになくなるけど、絵本は何度も読めるから、一時的な満足ではなく、長い間の幸せ、未来を子どもたちのもとに届けてみませんか？

教育を受けることのできない人がいる中、読み書きができない人も多くいますが、教育（勉強）したいと思っている人に、きっかけを作ってあげませんか？

字を覚えるには、小さい頃から字（文字）にふれる機会を与えてあげることです。

文字が読めないことにより、命を落としたり、給料の高い仕事にもつくことができずに生活をしなければならない。

読み書きができないので、親が子どもに教えてあげることもできない。字が読めるだけで助かる命がある。

文字を読めることは子どもたちの命を守ることにつながる。

子どもたちが読める母国の絵本を子どもたちのためにプレゼントしてあげませんか？

世界の子ども達の未来を変えるために、絵本はボロボロになるまで、何度も、何度も読まれ大切に受け継がれて子どもたちの命となっていくはずです。
